39.1 正しい用法
＜39.1.1 人間との近い関係を示す場合＞
concernedとconcerningの第一義は、「人間の感情、あるいはより一般的に、人間と何らかの近い関係を持つ事柄に関する意味を含む」と解説され、典型的な例として以下の4例文が紹介されています。
(1) Information was sent immediately to individuals concerned.
(1') Information was sent immediately to concerned individuals.
(2) There are more concerning matters at this time.
(3) She had a concerned look on her face.
(1)のindividuals concernedは、individuals who are involvedという意味を示し、(1')のconcerned individualsは、individuals who are interestedと同義であると解説されています。また、(2)のconcerning mattersは、matters that cause worryの意味を示し、(3)のconcerned lookは、a look that conveys worry/apprehensionの意味を示すと解説されています。
＜39.1.2 regarding, in relation to, involvedなどの同義語として使用される場合＞
動詞concernについて、次のように解説されています。
動詞concernは、be about、regard、またはrelate toの意味を持ってThis article concerns the effects of deforestationのように使用することができる。この動詞の形容詞的形態concernedとconcerningも1、同様の意味を示すために用いることが可能である。
この用法の例文が7つ紹介されており、そのうちの4つを以下に記載します。
(4) He wrote two papers concerned with the stability of biomes.
(5) The details of chemical processes concerned in human thought are still largely unknown.
(6) Here we consider only terms concerning ensemble averages.
(8) As far as the presently considered behavior is concerned, this complication is irrelevant.
39.2 誤った用法
分詞concernedとconcerningをin question、of interest、under considerationなどの同義語として用いることは誤用であるとされており、以下のように補足されています。
2ここで例示する誤用の多くは、日本語の「関係している」をconcerned、またはconcerningと誤って訳したことに起因するようである。前節で挙げたいくつかの例文から明らかなように、この訳し方がふさわしい場合もあるが、意図しているのが、「当の」、「問題の」、「くだんの」で示せるような意味であれば、concerned、concerningは不適切である。
典型的な誤用例とリライト例が、合わせて7組紹介されており、そのうちの3組を以下に記載します。
誤用例[1]： We give a different form for the 't Hooft tensor concerned here.
リライト例(1)： We give a different form for the 't Hooft tensor/in question/of interest/under consideration/that we consider/that concerns us/under study/under investigation/here.
誤用例[2]： Thus the memory concerned is output after several linking stages.
リライト例(2)： Thus the memory /with which we are concerned/in question/of interest/ is output after several linking stages.
誤用例[6]： The concerning effects of this class of perturbations to the asymptotic behavior are discussed below.
リライト例(6)： The effects of this class of perturbations relevant to the asymptotic behavior are discussed below.
34.3 concerned with/inとconcerned about
concerned withは、about、with regard to、regards、is relevant to、addressなどと同様の意味で用いることができ、concerned inは、involved in、relevant toなどと同様の意味で用いることができる一方、これら以外の「concerned + [形容詞]」表現は、「全て個人的な関心（特に心配）を示す」と解説され、このような誤用例が1組紹介されています。
誤用例[4]： We are concerned about the quasiparticle mode with momemtum ρ.
リライト例(4)： We /consider/are interested in/investigate/study/ the quasiparticle mode with momemtum ρ.
concerned aboutはworried aboutと同意のため、[4]は意味的にかなり不自然であると解説されています。

『科学論文の英語用法百科』について
学術論文における英作文についての解説書シリーズ。現在、「第１編 よく誤用される単語と表現」と「第２編 冠詞用法」が出版されている。
筆者は、９年間にわたって、日本人学者によって書かれた約2,000本の理工学系論文を校閲してきた。その間、「日本人の書く英語」に慣れていく中で、日本人特有の誤りが何度も論文中に繰り返されることに気付いた。誤りの頻度は、その英語についての誤解がかなり広く（場合によってほぼ普遍的に）日本人の間に浸透していることを反映しているだろう。そのような根深く定着している誤りに焦点を当て、誤りの根底にある英語についての誤解をさぐり、解説することがシリーズの基本的な方針になっている。（第１編「序文」より）
第１編 よく誤用される単語と表現
シリーズの第一巻となる本書では、日本人にとって使い方が特に理解しにくい単語や表現を扱っている。
第２編 冠詞用法
冠詞についての誤解が原因となる日本人学者の論文に見られる誤りの多さ、またその誤りに起因する意味上の問題の深刻さがゆえに、当科学英語シリーズにおいて冠詞が優先度の高いテーマとなり、この本を第二編とすることにした。（p.1）
