コラム特許翻訳：数字をスペルアウトする際のルール

英文における数字の記載方法について，0から100までの整数はスペルアウトし，100より大きい整数は数字のまま記載するという方法があります^※1。

例：
・Many people think that seventy is too young to retire.
・Some students live more than fifteen kilometers from the school.
・The population of our village now stands at 5,893.

この方法に対して，1桁の整数のみスペルアウトし，それ以外の整数は数字のまま記載するという方法があります^※1（筆者はこの方法を採用しています）。

例：
・Many people think that 70 is too young to retire.
・Some students live more than 15 kilometers from the school.
・The three new parking lots will provide space for 540 more cars.

上記いずれの方法にかかわらず，文頭に数字が来る場合は必ずスペルアウトするとされています^※2。

例：One hundred ten candidates were accepted.

ただし，数字を文頭でスペルアウトすることにより起こる他箇所の数字との不統一感を避けたい場合は，数字を文頭に置かないように工夫することが推奨されています^※2。

例1：In all, 110 candidates were accepted.
例2：One hundred eighty of the 214 candidates had law degrees; the remaining 34 were doctoral candidates in fish immunology.
→ Of the 214 candidates, 180 had law degrees; the remaining 34 were doctoral candidates in fish immunology.
