米国式特許クレームにおける“adapted”, ”operable”, ”configured”について、Faber on Mechanics of Patent Claim Draftingは次のように解説している。
「MPEP §2111.04には、”adapted to”、”adapted for”という具体的表現が挙げられており、これらは米国特許庁によって限定にはならないと判断されると考えられる。
筆者の最近の経験では、”adapted”の代わりに”operable to (or for)”や”configured to (or for)”を使うと、米国特許庁はこれを限定とみなすようである。”adapted”は、動作を起こす能力（capability）はあるが、動作を起こさない可能性もあることを示唆している。一方、”configured”や”operable”は、構造（structure）と能力（capability）を表し、能力の発揮が継続的又は時々であるかを問わない。類似表現として、”designed to (or for)”がある。」
