apparatus
一般的に装置と呼ばれ、形容詞としても名詞としても用いられる。形容詞として用いられる場合、mechanical、machine-likeと同義。名詞として用いられる場合、machine、deviceと同義。apparatusは複数の要素から構成され、これらが協働して特定の結果を実現することが多い。apparatusに代えて、machine、device、circuit などが適宜使用されることがある。
Faber on Mechanics of Patent Claim Draftingでは、apparatusについて次のように解説されている。
The word “apparatus” is used generically to denote various machines and devices, including electrical circuits, computer-related apparatuses, hydraulic devices, anything mechanical or electrical having cooperating parts that accomplish some useful result, usually some act or operation on itself or on an article or workpiece.※
