今回は、特許英語において頻出の表現である「according to」について見ていきます。本Chapterの冒頭には、次のように書かれています。
前置詞according toの誤用はたびたび見られ、またその種類は多様である。実際、筆者が今まで校閲してきた論文の中では、according toが正しく使われている文は、半分に満たないだろう。（p.12）

3.1 正しい用法
according toの正しい用法には、主に３つの用法があると解説されており、それぞれの用法により書かれた8つの例文のうちいくつかを以下に抜粋します。
＜in keeping withまたはin agreement withの同義語としての用法＞
(1) As we see from the figure, the experimental form S(x, t) behaves according to the present theory in regions I and II.
＜as stated byまたはon the authority ofの同義語としての用法＞
(4) According to this prediction, in an off-critical quench, the b.c.c. phase appears before the triangular phase.
＜in the manner determined byの同義語としての用法＞
(6) In this model, the output of each neuron changes continuously and simultaneously according to (1.1)-(1.3).
これらの例文において、前置詞according toで始まる前置詞句は動詞を修飾する副詞の役割を果たし、それらの前置詞句により修飾されている動詞は、"behaves"、"appears"、"changes"である、と解説されています。
3.2 誤った用法
ここでは、according toの誤用例とリライト例が計18組記載されており、そのうちのいくつかを以下に抜粋します。以下の誤用例の前に、次のようなコメントが付されています。
日本人学者の論文に見られるaccording toの誤用は様々である2。誤って用いられる場合の大多数は、それを使うことで、前節の正しい用法として挙げた意味のいずれかに似た意味を示そうとしている。しかしながら、意味が類似しているからといって、誤用によって生じる問題がさほど深刻ではないということはない。
2本章で挙げる誤用例は、概して、日本語の「によって」、または「によれば」（あるいは「に従って」）という表現を、不適切にaccording toと訳したことに起因するようである。これらの表現がaccording toに当たる場合もあるが、当たらない場合の方がはるかに多いということに留意してほしい。(p.13)
誤用例[1]： According to the entropic effect, the polymer tends to occupy a large spatial region.

誤用例[5]：The cross section increases according to the increase of the coupling constant as shown by the dashed curves.

誤用例[6]：We next investigate the change of the feasible region of $(C, K, CO)$ according to the change of the input correlation time scale.

誤用例[13]：According to our method this term is treated as a perturbation.

『科学論文の英語用法百科』について
学術論文における英作文についての解説書シリーズ。現在、「第１編 よく誤用される単語と表現」と「第２編 冠詞用法」が出版されている。
筆者は、９年間にわたって、日本人学者によって書かれた約2,000本の理工学系論文を校閲してきた。その間、「日本人の書く英語」に慣れていく中で、日本人特有の誤りが何度も論文中に繰り返されることに気付いた。誤りの頻度は、その英語についての誤解がかなり広く（場合によってほぼ普遍的に）日本人の間に浸透していることを反映しているだろう。そのような根深く定着している誤りに焦点を当て、誤りの根底にある英語についての誤解をさぐり、解説することがシリーズの基本的な方針になっている。（第１編「序文」より）
第１編 よく誤用される単語と表現
シリーズの第一巻となる本書では、日本人にとって使い方が特に理解しにくい単語や表現を扱っている。
第２編 冠詞用法
冠詞についての誤解が原因となる日本人学者の論文に見られる誤りの多さ、またその誤りに起因する意味上の問題の深刻さがゆえに、当科学英語シリーズにおいて冠詞が優先度の高いテーマとなり、この本を第二編とすることにした。（p.1）
