第１編 よく誤用される単語と表現 Chapter 89 ～on the basis of～
まず、このChapterの冒頭において、basedの用法について次のように概説されています。
on the basis of...という表現は、日本人の書く学術論文で過度に使用され、多くの場合には誤って用いられる1。この表現はwith...providing/grounds/justification/forまたはin accordance with...という意味を持っており、正しい用法では、一般に、動詞を修飾するために使用される2。
1文法的に、on the basis of...は前置詞句であり、"on"が前置詞で"basis"がその目的語になっている。
2したがって、on the basis of...は副詞である。この表現は、形容詞の働きをするbased on...（第25章）と比較すべきである。
89.1 正しい用法
ここでは、on the basis ofの正しい用法の典型例が4つ紹介されており、以下にそのうちの2つを記載します。
| 正しい用例(1)： We conclude on the basis of these results that m1 is neither the largest nor the smallest element of Sm. |
(1)では、結論を"our results"に基づいて出すという意味を表しており、"on the basis of these results"は"conclude"を修飾している、と解説されています。
| 正しい用例(2)： We constructed a new theory on the basis of the experimental findings presented in Ref. [2]. |
(2)について、以下のように解説されています。
(2)は、実験による発見が新しい理論を作る根拠（つまり、それが必要であるという証拠）を与え、理論は、それによる予想が実験の結果と一致するように構成されたという意味を示している。ここで、前置詞句"on the basis of these experimental facts"は名詞"theory"ではなく、動詞"constructed"を修飾しているということに留意すべきである。
89.2 誤った用法
on the basis ofの誤った用例についての特徴について、次のように解説されています。
on the basis ofには、最もよく見られる誤用が二種類ある。その一つは、in reference toまたはwith respect toのような意味を表す目的で用いる場合、もう一つは、usingの同義語として用いる場合である。
そして、このような特徴の誤用例とリライト例が計18組紹介されており、以下にそのうちの4組を示します（それぞれの詳しい解説については本書を御覧ください）。

『科学論文の英語用法百科』について
学術論文における英作文についての解説書シリーズ。現在、「第１編 よく誤用される単語と表現」と「第２編 冠詞用法」が出版されている。
筆者は、９年間にわたって、日本人学者によって書かれた約2,000本の理工学系論文を校閲してきた。その間、「日本人の書く英語」に慣れていく中で、日本人特有の誤りが何度も論文中に繰り返されることに気付いた。誤りの頻度は、その英語についての誤解がかなり広く（場合によってほぼ普遍的に）日本人の間に浸透していることを反映しているだろう。そのような根深く定着している誤りに焦点を当て、誤りの根底にある英語についての誤解をさぐり、解説することがシリーズの基本的な方針になっている。（第１編「序文」より）
第１編 よく誤用される単語と表現
シリーズの第一巻となる本書では、日本人にとって使い方が特に理解しにくい単語や表現を扱っている。
第２編 冠詞用法
冠詞についての誤解が原因となる日本人学者の論文に見られる誤りの多さ、またその誤りに起因する意味上の問題の深刻さがゆえに、当科学英語シリーズにおいて冠詞が優先度の高いテーマとなり、この本を第二編とすることにした。（p.1）
