特許明細書では、「～によっては」という表現が頻出します。
特許英訳において、「～によっては」をdepending onとしている例が多く見られますが、depending onで始まる節は、「分詞節という、正しい用法では名詞を修飾する従属節である*」ため、depending onをできるだけこの正しい用法で使うことが好ましく、正しい用法ではない場合にはdepending on以外の表現を検討する必要があると思われます。
以下、「～によっては」を英訳する際にdepending onが正しい用法で使えないと思われる場合の、depending on以外の表現について考えていきます。

"In some cases"、"In some configurations"、"In some embodiments"でsomeが使われていることから分かるように、「～によっては」はsomeを使って表現できることがあります。

また、「～によっては」の類似表現として、「～によって異なる」という表現があり、これもdepending onを使ってdiffer depending onやvary depending onとする例がよく見られますが、名詞を修飾するというdepending onの正しい用法に反しているため、differ depending on等は避けるべき表現と思われます。
