Chef America v. Lamb-Weston, 358 F.3d 1371 (Fed. Cir. 2004)は、クレームにおける"to"と"at"の違いが重要な意味をもった、翻訳者のあいだでも有名な事例です。
Chef America社の特許4,761,290のクレーム１に記載の"heating the resulting batter-coated dough to a temperature in the range of about 400°F. to 850°F."について、米国知財高裁は"to"をその通常の意味ととらえ、dough（パン生地）を華氏400～850度（摂氏約204～454度）の温度「に」熱することがクレームされていると解釈し、"to"は"at"を意図している（つまり、オーブン内を上記温度にする）というChef America社の主張を退けています。

米国知財高裁は、クレームの記載（words）について"They mean exactly what they say."と一般論を述べた上で、クレーム１の記載によると、パン生地が記載された温度まで熱せられるのであり、オーブンをこの温度に設定するのではないとしています（そもそもクレーム１に"oven"等の記載がないと指摘しています）。
また、仮にパン生地を華氏400～850度まで熱すると、パン生地は焼け焦げる結果charcoal briquet（成形炭）となり、これは「意味のない結果（a nonsensical result）」だというChef America社の反論に対し、意味のない結果が生じるか好ましい結果が生じるかはここでは無関係であると高裁は述べています。
さらに、特許権者はクレームに記載の用語に対して通常とは異なる独自の意味を与えることができる（"to"に"at"の意味を与えることができる）という点（lexicography）について、米国知財高裁は、出願経過等に"to"を"at"を意図して使ったという証拠は見られないと述べています。
被告のLamb-Westonは、もちろん上記のような熱し方はしないため、結果として非侵害となっています。
本件のような文脈で、翻訳者が"at"とすべきところを"to"と誤記してしまうようなことはかなり稀と思われますが、本件はたった１語で大きな結果の違いを生んだ例として語られることの多い事例となっています。
