compare toとcompare withの使い分けについて、『現代英語語法辞典』やThe New York Times Manual of Style and Usageなどの用法辞典では、次のような使い分けが推奨されています。
| ・compare toは、「本質的に性質の異なるものの間にある顕著な類似点に注意が払われた場合に"たとえる"の意で*」使う。 She compared the child to a noisy monkey.* The book compared the quarterback's role to the job of a company's vice president for operations.** |

| ・compare withは、「主に本質的に類似した性質と考えられるもの同士をさらに比較・分析した結果、その類似性と相違点を指摘する場合に"比較する"の意で*」使う。 If you compare her work with his, you'll find hers is much better.* They compared Terry's forecasting with Dana's, and found Dana's more accurate.** |
ただし、実際にはこのような区別は守られておらず、特にくだけた文体ではcompare withの代わりにcompare toが使用されているとされています。
| The company's sales this year are excellent compared to last year's.* |
特許明細書においては、類似点よりも相違点（本発明と先行技術との相違点など）を見出すことの方が多いと思われます。当社は、相違点を見出す文脈ではcompare withを使うようにしています。
